Meet bgep

Dr. Patricia Dove
Professor of Geochemistry
email: dove@vt.edu

Dove was named a 2008 Fellow in the American Geophysical Union for her outstanding contributions to the biogeosciences. She is also the recipient of an Undergraduate Teaching Excellence Award, the F.W. Clarke Medal, and is twice recognized by DOE Best University Research Awards. (link: VT Highlight)

Laura Hamm
Ph.D. Student
email: maehamm6@vt.edu

Laura arrived with excellent undergraduate credentials in Environmental Chemistry from Appalachian State University. She is the recent recipient of a NSF Graduate Fellowship and was awarded a VT Dean's Fellowship. Having completed final coursework at our Virginia Tech campus in Switzerland, she is now conducting computational and experimental research into polymorph selection-- processes that determine the calcium carbonate phase that is mineralized into skeletons.

Allison Stephenson
Phd. Student
email: aestephe@vt.edu

Allison joined our group with a B.S. degree from Arizona State University and extensive undergraduate research experiences in laboratory and field studies.  She received an Honorable Mention from the NSF Graduate Fellowship Program for the excellence of her research plan into understanding chemical and biological factors that influence Mg signatures in biogenic carbonates.

Dongbo Wang
Phd. Student
email: wangdb@vt.edu

Dongbo has B.S. degrees in Geosciences and Computer Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder with extensive undergraduate experience in an analytical geochemistry laboratory and interdisciplinary projects that combined his geoscience and programming backgrounds.  Dongbo is a NSF IGERT Fellow and recently received the 2009 MSA Research Grant for his proposal to investigate new pathways to carbonate mineralization and calcification by nonclassical processes.

Nizhou Han
Post Doctoral Scientist
email: nhan@vt.edu

Nizhou has her Ph.D. from the University of Iowa and undergraduate degrees from Nanjing University.   She is a careful experimentalist with many years of laboratory experience and has been recognized for her research excellence both at Iowa State and through the most recent DOE Best University Research Award.

Adam Wallace
Postdoctoral Scientist
email: afw@vt.edu

Adam received his B.S. degree from the Univ. of California, Davis, he researched the geochemistry of geothermal systems for 1 1/2 years at the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.  During his phd studies, he received an Honorable Mention from the NSF Graduate Fellowship Program, the Holden-Wones Graduate Fellowship and was recognized as an excellent teacher. As a newly minted Ph.D., he is presently publishing several important studies from his Ph.D. research and developing new expertise in computational methods.

Jason Waters
Undergraduate
email: jfwaters@vt.edu

Jason is pursuing an undergraduate degree in Geosciences with a Minor in Chemistry.  He is the recipient of the Lowry Field Camp Scholarship.  Upon his return from his field camp in Australia, Jason will work with us on the NSF calcification project for his Undergraduate Research.  Future goals include graduate studies in chemical oceanography.
